What is narcissistic abuse?

Narcissistic abuse is a term people use for a pattern of emotional manipulation and control in a relationship, often by a partner, parent, friend or colleague with strong narcissistic traits. It can include criticism, blame, gaslighting, silent treatment, and cycles of affection followed by withdrawal.

It often happens gradually, which is why many people only recognise it later.

You do not need to diagnose the other person, or be certain which label fits, to seek support. We focus on the behaviours you experienced and how they have affected you.

How narcissistic abuse can affect you

  • Doubting your own memory, judgement or feelings
  • Feeling on edge, anxious, or unable to switch off
  • Losing touch with who you are and what you want
  • Blaming yourself, or trying to work out what you did wrong
  • Finding it hard to trust others, or yourself
  • Feeling drained, or stuck replaying what happened

What is a trauma bond?

A trauma bond is a strong attachment that can develop within an abusive relationship, particularly when harm alternates with affection, reassurance or relief. You may recognise that the relationship is hurting you and still feel drawn back. This does not mean you are weak. Fear, hope, attachment, isolation and practical circumstances can all make leaving or staying away difficult.

Somatic coaching can help you notice how these patterns show up in your body, and build a sense of safety at your own pace.

Why your body still braces

Long periods of walking on eggshells can leave your nervous system on high alert, even after the relationship has ended. You might still flinch at a message notification, rehearse conversations in your head, or feel tense around certain tones of voice. That isn’t you overreacting. It’s your body still trying to protect you.

Recovery isn’t linear

There’s no fixed timeline for narcissistic abuse recovery. Some weeks feel lighter, and then something brings it all back. That’s a normal part of the process, not a sign you’re going backwards. We work at your pace, and you decide what we focus on.

“You are deserving of healthy relationships. Safe connections change everything.”

How coaching supports you

Long periods of walking on eggshells can leave your nervous system on high alert, even after the relationship has ended. Somatic coaching works with your body as well as your thoughts, so we can notice those responses and build practical tools to help you feel calmer and safer.

We also look at the patterns of behaviour you experienced, so they make more sense, and work on rebuilding your sense of self-worth and your trust in your own judgement. Where it’s helpful, I bring in Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems-informed parts work, positive psychology and hypnotherapy.

Scope of this workCoaching is not a substitute for therapy or medical care, and it isn’t a crisis service. If you need a different kind of support, I’ll suggest it.

Is this right for me?

This may feel right if

  • You often doubt your own memory, judgement or feelings
  • You’re trying to make sense of what happened, even if you’re not sure which label fits
  • You still feel on edge, or stuck replaying what happened
  • You’d like to rebuild trust in yourself at your own pace

Other support may be better first if

  • You’re in danger or don’t feel safe right now. Please use the urgent help details at the top of this page
  • You need specialist domestic abuse, legal or housing support first
  • You’re looking for assessment or treatment for a mental health condition, including PTSD

Not sure? The free 30-minute discovery call is there to talk it through, and if a different kind of support would suit you better, I’ll tell you honestly.

Narcissistic abuse recovery: common questions

How long does narcissistic abuse recovery take?

There’s no fixed timeline. Recovery depends on what you went through, how long it lasted, the support around you and what’s happening in your life now. It rarely moves in a straight line. We work at your pace, and review together how things are going rather than working to a deadline.

Do I need to have left the relationship to work with you?

No. Some people come to me while they’re still in the relationship, some after it has ended, and some years later. We start from wherever you are. If you’re still in a relationship that feels unsafe, the National Domestic Abuse Helpline can help with safety planning, any time.

Do I need to be sure it was narcissistic abuse?

No. Many people aren’t sure what to call what happened. We focus on your experience and how it’s affecting you now, rather than on labels or diagnosing anyone. You don’t need to prove anything or explain your whole story on the free discovery call.

Is this therapy?

No. I offer trauma-informed coaching, which can work alongside counselling, psychotherapy or medical care. Coaching isn’t a treatment for any condition, and it isn’t a crisis service. If I feel another kind of support would help you more, I’ll say so honestly and suggest where to find it.

If I’m in danger, what should I do?

If you’re in the UK and in immediate danger, call 999. If you’re elsewhere, contact your local emergency services. In the UK you can also contact the National Domestic Abuse Helpline, run by Refuge, free and 24 hours a day, on 0808 2000 247. The Men’s Advice Line, run by Respect, is on 0808 8010 327.
